Slick-Wood

With the variety of scented trees in Silkwood the 150 dogs that entered the cani-cross race were on a mission to find a new Cani-X perfume - a job Allen and Barney took very seriously!

There was of course more important things to attend to other than smelling the roses, like chasing all those other dogs around the course. We saw some fantastic times despite the waterlogged muddy back stretch of the 5km course. The 2.5km course avoided the mud, cutting through the centre of Silkwood along the majestic Broad Drive.

Strider, the giant wolfhound, found himself quite at home amongst the giant Redwoods with a time of 23:36; although Jasmine, the Yorkshire Terrier, struggled to find a tree more her size, but completed the course in a respectable 28:45. Three generations of the Englands ran in the VM+/XF/J classes and under 11s fun run.

Over the 4.6km course, the fastest times of the day were (full results):

  • 24:49 - P Higgins (VM+: 60+) with a Lurcher
  • 28:55 - H Husband (VF+: 60+) with a Border Collie
  • 16:40 - G Fisher (VM :40-59) with a Border Collie
  • 21:00 - A John (VF: 40-59)with a Border Collie cross
  • 15:15 - C Newby (M: 17-39) with a Labrador
  • 19:10 - S Quantrill (F: 17-39) with a Labrador/Retriever
  • 19:28 - G Goodwin (JM: 13-16) with a Siberian Husky
  • 16:22 - R Cook (XM: 17+) with Siberian Huskies
  • 20:38 - A Webb (XF: 17+) with Pointers

...and over the 2.9km course:

  • 13:31 - J England (J: 11-12) with a Groenendael

It was a great day helped by the many volunteers to get 116 runners on the course in record time without any hiccups. It went smoothly aided by the Forestry Commission staff who were on hand to direct traffic, move marshals and generally get down and dirty with us.

With the Dog Day in full swing there was lots to see and do including cuddling the wolf cubs that were there for the 2 days and trade stands to visit.

The next event is at Delamere Forest on the 25.3.07
