Event: Cheltenham Racecourse (22.4.07) Join the Cani-Cross UK mailing list and receive email updates of future events CLICK HERE Horses for courses With 400 in attendance, it was a great turnout for our Cheltenham finale. The racecourse was in pristine condition for the day. All this helped by glorious weather, picnic blankets and a lazy day out. Well...not so lazy for the runners. The course itself was demanding and although running on wood chip can be spongy it can also turn the legs into lead. Luckily there was green grass and even hard core to pick up speed after the soft bits. Spectators on the top grandstand watched their friends and family running around the race course and the applause and cheers were great to hear as they crossed the finish line. It was good to see a Pug competing to dispel the myths that short nosed breeds cant run. This little lad has been training with his owner regularly and gave it welly all the way round. He was a joy to watch and came across the finish line pulling like a freight train. Well done Youfi. I am told he will be a force to reckon with come the next season! The grandstand backdrop gave the perfect setting for the first CaniX UK Championship Prizegiving. Its been a fantastic season made all the more special because ex-rescue dogs won five of the ten classes. Winners in the 10 classes were awarded a years supply of Burns Dog Food, with second and third prizes from Ezydog and Groomers. Well done to all who have trekked around the country to run in the events. We had nine competitors that created special interest and touched everyones hearts. Cheltenham Animal Shelter and Evesham Dogs Trust were invited to run some of their longer term residents. The aim was to highlight their plight in the hope that someone would give them a home. They did their 3km run (accompanied by the five ex-rescue dogs who won the Championship and our sponsor Burns Pet Nutrition). The rest of the day was spent lying around in the grass being made a fuss of. They were incredibly well behaved - true hero's. I imagine they slept well that night. The event raised £1,086.00 for charity. £798 for Cheltenham Animal Shelter (£78 from entries, £300 in CAS sales and one of our championship winners donated their prize of one years supply of Burns Dog Food to CAS worth £420 - and yes they feed Burns to their own dogs). £203 was raised for Riding for the Disabled via the catering. £85 for Animal Asia Foundation. The Neolithic CaniCross is our final event for the season after which - harnesses R off! Try not to loose the fitness that you have all worked so hard at over the season. Incorporate smaller runs in the early hours of the day or late in the evenings when the sun has gone down and always carry water with you. Gentle jogs should keep you ticking over until September. A brilliant season for CaniX UK with so many of you jumping in to help make these events work - many thanks. Have a great summer... Eileen and Richard The next event is the Neolithic CaniCross on the 6.5.07 with a choice of half marathon (13mile) and 4 mile distances.
