With thanks to the Forestry
Commission, we are pleased to be running a CaniX and Bikejor at Kielder Castle (at 250 square miles Kielder Forest Park is England's largest forest). This event is the weekend prior to the Glentress CaniX for those traveling north to make a weeks holiday of it over the Easter break and get three CaniX races for the bargin!
Kielder Castle was built in 1775 as a hunting lodge for the Duke of Northumberland, and is now the focal point for visitors to the forest. The Castle itself houses a series of exhibitions about the forest and its wildlife, together with an information centre, gift shop and licensed restaurant. The grounds include picnic sites, children's playground, the Dukes and Duchess walking trails and the start of cycling, a mountain bike skills loop, orienteering routes. Within the grounds of the Castle is a work of art called Minotaur, which is a maze built of basalt stone and glass. Kielder Castle itself opens at Easter.
Kielder Water and Forest Park is an area of stunning beauty and serenity - according to the Campaign to Protect Rural England it is officially the country's most tranquil spot. For those planning to make a long weekend of it, we have Caniteering on the Saturday and once you have finished exploring Englands largest forest, there is always Kielder Water Northern Europe's largest man-made lake. Kielder is also known for its sections of Hadrian's Wall and the Holy Island and Castle of Lindisfarne are on the Northumberland coast.
